The principal and customary work of an employee in this class of employment consist in providing aid to students and helping the teacher with non-teaching tasks. The support offered in the classroom must contribute to its smooth operation as well as to the overall development of students, in the class or to a group of students within the class, while ensuring their safety and well-being.


The employee in this class of employment conducts and participates in classroom, sports, cultural, leisure and recreational activities, both indoors and outdoors, in keeping with the program and educational intervention strategies.

He or she ensures student supervision and safety in accordance with rules of conduct and safety measures.

He or she accompanies and supervise students, as needed, during arrival and dismissal.

He or she contributes to simple follow-ups with students during transition periods.

He or she informs teachers and all those concerned about student’ behaviour.

He or she provides support to students by ensuring a climate and environment conducive to learning and the completion of schoolwork.

He or she helps students settle into the classroom and get ready for work.

He or she answers questions according to the instructions given to the student by the teacher.

He or she provides support to certain students in accordance with the competency framework of each (e.g.: supervises and assists students during assessments).

He or she helps ensure compliance with instructions and intervene with students, as needed, to enforce classroom or life rules.

He or she assists in the development of students’ autonomy (e.g., helps with dressing and undressing, managing students’ materials).

He or she assists students in preparing and eating snacks, while ensuring that the rules promoting hygiene and well-being are observed.

He or she assists the teacher with certain administrative tasks (e.g., compiling activity registration forms, photocopying).

He or she helps keep the classroom clean and tidy and maintain materials.

He or she helps prepare and display a variety of materials (e.g., laminate materials).

He or she helps organize events, activities, and field trips (e.g., back-to-school party, house team activities, outing).

He or she administers first aid and, if necessary, administers medications according to medical requirements and the school’s policy and the parents’ instructions.

He or she attends, upon request, information meetings intended for parents.

He or she may be required to participate in meetings to draw up an individualized education plan to convey his or her observations and makes pertinent suggestions concerning a student with a handicap, social maladjustment or learning difficulty and applies the measures chosen within the scope of his or her duties; works with others to follow up on student files.

He or she may be required to use a computer and the necessary software to perform his or her duties.

If need be, he or she performs any other related duty.


Schooling and experience:

Hold a Secondary School Diploma and an Attestation of Vocational Studies in Day Care Services or a diploma and an attestation of studies recognized as equivalent by the competent authority, and have one (1) year of pertinent experience.


Hold a certificate dated no more than three (3) years attesting to the successful completion of:

  1. a standard first aid course of a minimum eight (8)-hour duration;
  2. a refresher course of a minimum six (6)-hour duration updating the skills acquired in the course mentioned in subparagraph 1.


 Between $ 23.89 and $ 27.56 per hour.
